Shadow” by Chromatics

Fans of this chilled-out, 80s-ish electro outfit have been patient as the band’s record is nine months past due.  Appetites are temporarily satiated by way of this track, a collaboration with Adult Swim, who in the past has worked closely with Ann Arbor electronic label Ghostly International.

This Week’s Calendar

Beach House @ Royal Oak Music Theatre | Friday, September 19th @ 8 PM

Off the heals of the new record –the more ambitious, noisy and mature “Depression Cherry” —  we’re seeing the broody croon of Beach House take on intimate themes in sizeable venues across the nation.

HAFLAH! The National Arab Orchestra & Michigan Philharmonic @ Music Hall | Saturday, September 19th @ 7:30 PM

The Haflah! Arab Fusion Fest combines the western talents of the Michigan Philharmonic with those magnificent, Middle Eastern sounds of the National Arab Orchestra. The event sees special guest composers Kareem Roustom and Wael Binali collaborate in a way that honors and celebrates Detroit’s diverse communities through the universality of music.

Strange Beautiful Music @ The Max | Sunday, September 20th @ 4 to 12 PM

New Music Detroit presents its annual marathon of the genre at The Max in Midtown. This go-round, featuring composer/percussionist Andy Akiho and guests Latitude 49, Elliot Cole and Willo Collective, GVSU New Music Ensemble, Donald Sinta Saxophone Quartet, Apetechnology and our first Call for Scores winner Hadi Ayanbod. Free your mind and your ears will follow.

Michigan Burlesque Festival @ Hastings Street Ballroom/Tangent Gallery | Thru September 20th

Some of the best in the biz throughout the Midwest convene in Detroit this weekend for a celebration of flirtatious, sometimes salacious performance art. Traditional burlesque numbers will be accompanied by a little nerdlesque, firedance, hula hoop, vaudevillian sideshow, and a couple of the cutest damn clowns you’ll ever lay your eyes on.

MOCAD Fall Opening with United States of Latin America, Jonathan Hernandez and Burnt Sugar | Friday, September 18th @ 7 PM

United States of Latin America brings together more than thirty emerging artists from Latin America, many of whom will be exhibiting in the United States for the first time. Based on an ongoing conversation between the curators Jens Hoffmann and Pablo León de la Barra, the exhibition extends their dialogue into the galleries of MOCAD. A wide range of works touches upon themes such as geography, history, urbanism, memory, colonialism, architecture, war, modernism, social inequality, regionalism, and power.

New York City’s Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber is an electrifying funk guild aspiring to the condition of all that is molten, glacial, racial, spatial, oceanic, mythic, antiphonal, and telepathic. Rolling Stone calls them “a multiracial jam army that freestyles with cool telekinesis between the lustrous menace of Miles Davis’s On The Corner, the slash-and-om of 1970s King Crimson, and Jimi Hendrix’s moonwalk across side three of Electric Ladyland.”

Mayaeni, Cold English, ONEFREQ & Doc Illingsworth @ Majestic Cafe | Friday, September 18th @ 7 PM

Behold a barrage of some of Detroit’s most exciting live soul and hip-hop acts as they converge on the Majestic Cafe to kick off the weekend right.
