The Haflah! Arab Fusion Fest combines the western talents of the Michigan Philharmonic with those magnificent, Middle Eastern sounds of the National Arab Orchestra. The event sees special guest composers Kareem Roustom and Wael Binali collaborate in a way that honors and celebrates Detroit’s diverse communities through the universality of music.

Some of the best in the biz throughout the Midwest convene in Detroit this weekend for a celebration of flirtatious, sometimes salacious performance art. Traditional burlesque numbers will be accompanied by a little nerdlesque, firedance, hula hoop, vaudevillian sideshow, and a couple of the cutest damn clowns you’ll ever lay your eyes on.
MOCAD Fall Opening with United States of Latin America, Jonathan Hernandez and Burnt Sugar | Friday, September 18th @ 7 PM
United States of Latin America brings together more than thirty emerging artists from Latin America, many of whom will be exhibiting in the United States for the first time. Based on an ongoing conversation between the curators Jens Hoffmann and Pablo León de la Barra, the exhibition extends their dialogue into the galleries of MOCAD. A wide range of works touches upon themes such as geography, history, urbanism, memory, colonialism, architecture, war, modernism, social inequality, regionalism, and power.
New York City’s Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber is an electrifying funk guild aspiring to the condition of all that is molten, glacial, racial, spatial, oceanic, mythic, antiphonal, and telepathic. Rolling Stone calls them “a multiracial jam army that freestyles with cool telekinesis between the lustrous menace of Miles Davis’s On The Corner, the slash-and-om of 1970s King Crimson, and Jimi Hendrix’s moonwalk across side three of Electric Ladyland.”
