Detroit Transit Center, People Mover to Temporarily Close

Officials are closing Detroit’s major transit systems to allow agencies to practice for potential emergency situations.

Detroit’s major public transit systems will close Sunday as city officials practice their response to emergency situations.

Homeland security officials have often warned that public transit could be a target for terrorist activity.

So officials with the Detroit People Mover and the city’s Department of Transportation say they will close those systems for a series of preparedness exercises.

They say the efforts are designed to weigh what capacity first responders have to address and emergency situation…as well as analyze the effectiveness of “prevention, mitigation response and recovery between area health systems.”

The facilities will close early Sunday morning along with some nearby streets.

The transit center, the main hub for the Detroit bus system, will reopen later in the afternoon.

The People Mover will not resume service until Monday.
