Southfield Freeway Closed This Weekend

M-39 will close in both directions between Joy Road and I-96 on Friday at 10 PM.

Construction

The Southfield Freeway will be closed in both directions this weekend between Joy Road and I-96 starting at 10:00 p.m. Friday. Construction to replace a pedestrian bridge at Cathedral Road is underway after a semi-trailer truck snagged the bottom of the overpass last fall.

Michigan Department of Transportation Spokesperson Diane Cross says the bridge is expected to re-open this fall.

“We’re really shooting for late September to try and get it open. But very often, construction has delays, sometimes weather is an issue,” Cross says. “We actually were going to close the freeway last weekend to do this work. But because of the tanker fire we had on I-75, a lot of that traffic was being detoured on the Southfield Freeway.”

Detours will direct drivers toward Telegraph in the meantime. The freeway is expected to re-open no later than 5:00 am on Monday.
