Detroit teachers and members of BAMN, a coalition for equal rights, protested union charges against Detroit Federation of Teachers president Steve Conn Tuesday. Conn is facing internal misconduct complaints before the union’s executive board.

Nicole Conaway is a Detroit teacher, a BAMN organizer, and a member of the DFT.  She called the charges a political witch hunt.

“They’re really afraid of the teachers finally electing Steve, and pushing the DFT to make a real fight and joint he building of the civil rights movements because it is the only we are going to protect our jobs, the student’s education and the future of the city,” Conaway says.

Steve Conn called the trial distracting, divisive, and dangerous in a letter on the union’s website.

The closed proceedings began Monday morning.
