Construction Underway on M-39 Bridge

The Michigan Department of Transportation is replacing the pedestrian bridge over the M-39 highway.

Construction

Construction is underway on a new pedestrian bridge over the M-39 freeway at Cathedral Avenue. The bridge was pulled down last year when a semi-truck passing under it snagged the crossway.

State Transportation Spokesperson Diane Cross says the process to replace the bridge is moving quickly.

“We were already in the works of rebuilding a new bridge when this accident happened,” Cross says. “So we got an emergency federal fund from the feds at almost about $3 million to hurry up and move that a little bit sooner so we could replace it now. Normally something like that takes a number of years.”

Cross says construction will close the entrance and exit ramps at Joy Road. The service drive north of the street will have only one lane open in each direction. The new bridge is expected to be completed by the fall.
