“I’m a third-generation Detroiter, so it’s in my blood to be a part of the city.”

Artist Robert Sestok

From murals to sculptures, Robert Sestok is a quintessential Detroit artist. Back in the 1960s, he ditched his California dreams for a life of artistry during Detroit’s most turbulent time, developing the Willis Gallery (now Avalon Bakery) with a few of his artist friends. A core part of the Cass Corridor Art Movement, Sestok’s welds heavy metal in the form skillfully, playfully, meaningfully manipulated of steel and iron. With his latest project, Sestok went bigger than ever with the City Sculpture Park, deep in the Cass Corridor. He chats with WDET’s Travis Wright about making art in the city, his new book, Selected Artworks 2004-2014, and shares a timely clip from “The Famous Coachman” from WDET back in the day.
