“Sometimes” by Prince Harvey

New York artist Prince Harvey made headlines around the world last week with the best press release in a long, long time. Facing the tightest of budgets and a busted laptop, Harvey became a regular at the SoHo Apple Store where, somehow, he recorded his entire album. Is this a marketing ploy? Unsure. Either way, the songs — mainly constructed all by vocal effects —  are worthy.

Concert of Colors All Star Tribute to Marcus Belgrave @ Orchestra Hall |Saturday, July 11 @ 8 PM

Anyone who’s anyone who plays jazz in Detroit (and beyond) was, in some way, a student of trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Not only was he one of the best, he was a sage and a lion in the community. The who’s who of jazz in Detroit convene to collaborate and celebrate his legacy.

An Evening of Original Music by Jarrod Champion @ Music Hall | Friday @ 7 PM

His roots are deep in Detroit, but  when he sits in front of the keys, Jarrod Champion’s sound makes its way to the south, over in the dixieland and delta. Ask anyone, he’s one of the best in the city. If it’s top notch Detroit made music you seek, look no further.

Container Lofts Sneak Peek @ 2549 Trumbull | Friday @ 3 PM

Some architects use bricks and wood or steel and glass, but the ones on the cutting edge use shipping containers. New lofts made from reclaimed containers are making their appearance on Trumbull. Check out what the fuss is all about to the tune of the Gabriel Brass Band.

Alchemy @ Inner State Gallery | Friday @ 7 PM

Want to learn how to make gold from lead? So do we! So maybe you won’t learn how to do that but this gallery show is all about how artists draw from their environment to make something completely new.

Queen Kwong @ UFO | Friday @ 8 PM

Heralded by Nine Inch Nail’s frontman Trent Reznor, Queen Kwong is one-chick against the world. She’s got the moody blues with a tinge of nefarious fuzz on songs like “The Wicked Fruit” and “Baby Did a Bad Thing”. National monument-turned-rock band The Rushmores open at the UFO Factory.

Blair Alise & The Bombshells Record Release Show @ UFO Factory | Friday @ 9am

Blair Alise is the real deal. Sure, she young, but this 18 year old is a total badass throwback pop rocker who’s ready and raring to tackle stages of any size and in any land. Don’ be a dingus, go she will! Catch this act before she heads to NYU this fall.
