Detroit City Council to Reconsider Water Rate Vote
Members of the Detroit City Council say they will reconsider a proposed 7.5 % water rate increase.
The Detroit City Council has decided to reconsider its rejection of a proposed water rate hike. Last week members voted against a 7.5 percent water rate increase designed to help eliminate an estimated $27 million deficit.
Council Member Janee Ayers says the information regarding the deficit should have been presented before the first vote.
“That 7.5 percent rate does worry me. Now do we need to fix infrastructure? Absolutely. But to say that if we don’t do one thing then this is going to happen…all of those things should have been laid out in the very beginning.”

Ayers says part of the reason she voted no the first time is because some Detroiters are struggling to pay their water bills. She says it is unclear when council will make a final decision on a possible rate hike.
