Detroit Police Department Opening Museum to Showcase its History
The new Detroit Police Museum displays artifacts previously kept in storage.
The Detroit Police Department is putting historic traffic signals, body armor and other artifacts connected to the force on public display. The new Detroit Police Museum showcases 150 years of law enforcement history. Spokesperson Sergeant Cassandra Lewis says items will be rotated through the museum that, until now, were kept in storage.
“There is one of the motorcycles that we used to ride, a scooter… You have the old switchboard that’s there. There are several pictures on the outside of the museum that have some of our fallen officers. So it’s just a wide range of stuff that we have found and collected and saved.”

Lewis says Police Chief James Craig is the driving force behind the initiative to create the museum. She says the collection is open to the public Monday through Friday at police headquarters in Detroit.
