Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Awards Detroit’s Recycling Program $95,000
The Detroit Department of Public Works is receiving $95,000 to grow its recycling initiatives.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is awarding $95,000 to support Detroit’s recycling initiatives. The grant will allow the city’s Department of Public Works to purchase 1,600 new recycling containers for homes and grow its marketing efforts. DEQ spokesperson Karen Tommasulo says the funding is part of Gov. Snyder’s initiative to double the amount of materials recycled in Michigan.
“Every year Michiganders throw away about $435 million worth of recyclable materials, and that’s things like metals, wood, paper, plastics… It’s beyond just the bottles and cans that you return to the store.”

Tommasulo says more than 200,000 households in Detroit have access to curbside recycling. She says the DEQ also gave the city an award for its efforts to bring the service to homes.
