Weight Ristrictions Are Lifted for Truckers

MDOT is lifting weight restrictions for truck drivers this spring.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is lifting all weight restrictions on state trunkline highways in most of the Lower Peninsula. Special weight limits are put in place in the winter time to help protect the roads.

MDOT spokesperson Dan Weingarten says restrictions are removed early in the spring.

“When the ground is frozen and there is still water on top of that frozen ground,” Weingarten says. “Below the pavement it’s kind of like having a sheet of plate glass floating on a water bed. And if you have a heavy load on top of that you can see why it can cause cracking or damage the pavement.”

Weingarten says MDOT’s weight restrictions only apply to major state-maintained roadways. He says truck drivers should check weight restrictions on county and city roads since they may be different.
