My Song 5” by Movement

The Australian R&B Movement made a rather moody rendition of the Haim jam. It’s a nocturnal, entrancing cover to be sure.

Yusef Lateef: Towards the Unknown  @Trinosophes | Friday, March 20th @ 6 PM

You’ll hear more about this exhibition on Culture City after the opening, but this is a jazz-art-Detroit-lover’s dream: Here’s what the fine folks at Trinosophes tell us: “Yusef Lateef: Towards the Unknown” is an exhibition of drawings, graphic notations and scores by the master musician, composer and artist, Dr. Yusef Lateef (1920 – 2013). The exhibition of rarely seen work touches upon Dr. Lateef’s ongoing search for ways to reflect peace and love in the world, a creative practice that resonates throughout his music and visual art.The exhibition at Trinosophes includes examples of these notations alongside a selection of drawings created with watercolor, pen, ink, graphite and glitter. “Towards the Unknown” is curated by Alhena Katsof and organized with White Columns in New York City. The exhibition at Trinosophes runs March 20th through May 10th, supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Meta Physica Massage.

Karriem Riggins Juke Joint @ Elizabeth Theatre | Friday March 20th at 9 PM

Detroit’s Karriem Riggins is an incredible drummer, but he’s also an accomplished producer and DJ. A few times a year he blesses us with a party fueled by his favorite music, which includes music from multiple genres, but nothing generic.

Drake Phifer opens. Dancing there will be.

313 to the 312 Choreography Expo @ Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts | Friday March 20th at 9 PM

The locally-based ARTLAB-J dance company presents a new layout from previous “Moving with Detroit” events with an exciting cross-city collaboration. Represented by area-code Detroit is the infamous 313 while Chicago holds it down for the 312. The number of dance opportunities in Detroit seems to be multiplying by the month. Here’s your last chance to chop it up with dance industry professionals and supporters while taking in some of region’s fleet-footed-finest.

Marche du Nain Rouge 2015 @ Traffic Jam & Snug | Sunday, March 22nd @ 1 PM

Detroit’s annual parade through the Cass Corridor, masked and merry, as revelers join forces to celebrate the spring equinox and put the devious red troll in its place. Here’s the gist straight from the source: “Appear as you once were, or yet could be, at the Marche du Nain Rouge, kicking off at or around 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Traffic Jam & Snug, 511 W. Canfield St.  The Marche will process along Second Avenue instead of Cass, ending at Cass Park in front of the Masonic Temple. Come masked or fully costumed; groups are encouraged to join in the fun with DIY chariots — i.e. non-motorized floats. There is no cost, just come out and have a good time!”

Cold English with Britney Stoney and Rachel B  @ Northern Lights Lounge | Saturday, March 21st @ 9 PM

Rapper D. Allie and the Detroit hip-hop band Cold English headline this soulfully charged show. But there’s more to thrill than that run of the mill, radio-made rap and R&B frill you might be used to.  Britney Stoney’s blend of soul-folk is always inspired. We’ll also hear from Rachel B, from LA by way of Traverse City.
