Small Michigan Township Has Big Problem: Too Many Zip Codes

What Happens when too many Zip Codes Collide?

Too Many Zip Codes

In Hartland Township, north of Brighton, Michigan, officials say most residents – and even the school district – do NOT have a Hartland mailing address.

That’s because the 36-square-mile township, which has a population of only 15,000, is covered by seven different zip codes.

So Township officials want residents to submit their stories of the difficulties caused by the multiple zip codes, in hopes of persuading the government to change the patchwork of postal addresses.

WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter talked about the situation with the Hartland Township Manager – James Wickman.
