WDET's Tech Upgrade

Technology and media are changing at a rapid pace. WDET is rising to meet this challenge as a cutting-edge public media service that is everywhere you are, on any device you choose. Today, you have the opportunity to ensure that WDET is at the forefront of media innovation.

WDET's planned tech upgrades for this summer come with a $50,000 price tag. Your contribution - coupled with the gifts of other WDET supporters across Southeast Michigan - will make a big difference in WDET's ability to transcend the limitations of the broadcast tower, prepared for the next generation of listeners. Detroit deserves a state-of-the-art public media station. Do your part now to ensure WDET is prepared for the future!

Thanks to your support, we've exceeded our goal of $50k.

What's included:

Field Recorders & Remote Broadcasting Equipment

Our new remote broadcasting kit includes a state-of-art Telos ISDN/IP Remote unit and an 8 channel Mackie Mixer that improve our ability to capture audio and broadcast our shows from locations like Eastern Market and The Mackinac Policy Conference. Additional field recording devices make it possible for more of our reporters to provide you with sound-rich stories from around our community, bringing more diverse voices and perspectives to our airwaves.

Streaming Upgrades

A new server and sound card, combined with cutting-edge streaming software, means higher-quality and more reliable streams across all of your devices. On top of that, we'll be working with NPR to incorporate our streams into Apple Music and the in-dash apps that GM and other automotive manufacturers are putting into their vehicles. An investment in streaming means WDET will reach more people in more places and will stay with you wherever you go - now and in the future.

Website Redesign

We'll be working with a team of developers to improve the design and functionality of wdet.org. Most notably, the new site will be responsive, which means it works on any device you choose - mobile, tablet or desktop. Plus, we'll be able to provide you with more multimedia content and tools to help you discover new stories and music.

Expanded Music & News Storage

We want to ensure our news stories and music programs are archived and available for you in the future. A new file server provides us with 4X the storage capacity and extra room to grow.

Mobile App Upgrade

Our redesigned mobile app will include interactive features like breaking news alerts and roundups to start your day, tools to help you share your stories with us, and more of the programs you love on-demand.

Thank you to this special group of WDET supporters in our community that pooled together a $5,750 challenge grant for this campaign:
