Before heading off to Los Angeles, New York and New Orleans, director Mike Mills (“Beginners,” “20th Century Women”) opens his new film “C’Mon C’Mon” in Detroit.

The students at the Boggs School open the movie, being interviewed by Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) about what their hopes, dreams and anxieties are about the future. In this film, Phoenix plays a radio producer who is forced to take care of his nephew while on assignment. The film also features roles played by Gaby Hoffmann and Woody Norman.

Ahead of the Dec. 3 opening date of “C’Mon C’Mon,” Mills was in Detroit for a private screening of the film for the students and faculty from the Boggs School. He sat down with CultureShift’s Ryan Patrick Hooper to discuss the movie and the role Detroit plays in it.

“As an outsider, Detroit seemed so cool and such a deep place that’s been through so much stuff and handled it really well. I’ve always admired Detroit from a distance.” – Mike Mills, director
