Mental Health Initiative Will Help Fill Gaps in Treatment, Stabenow Says

Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics are transforming mental health and addiction treatment in Michigan, Stabenow says.

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow at Mackinac Policy Conference in 2019.

A new mental health initiative in Michigan led by Sen. Debbie Stabenow is providing $26.5 million in funding to Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics across the state.

“Both addiction treatment and mental health issues, they’re health care, and we need to treat them like health care.” –Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan)

Stabenow says the initiative will allow community clinics to provide high-quality, 24-hour care for mental health and addiction separate from police entities.

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) says Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics provide continuous, non-police-oriented help for those affected by mental health and addiction. “Both addiction treatment and mental health issues, they’re health care, and we need to treat them like health care.”

Despite these strides for health care in Michigan, Stabenow says she still does not support Medicare for All. “I want to get more health care to folks, and we don’t have the votes for Medicare For All … What we need is a public option… and then build up from there.”

On the recent passing of former Michigan U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee, Stabenow says the late congressman was the most supportive person she worked with. “He was Mr. Flint. And he was a champion for working men and women,” she says.
