When the world shut down, so did WDET’s Studio A. The recording space has seen performances from a bevy of local musicians and big-name acts like Joe Jackson and Suzanne Vega. It captured rising stars before they reached orbit, like Adele and Jeff Buckley.
And after sitting quiet for more than a year, 26-year-old singer-songwriter Olivia Dear brought the music back to Studio A with a performance of three songs — the outstanding “Halfway,” “Better” and an exclusive WDET performance of her unreleased song “One Whole Year.”
“Some of the best records I’ve ever heard in my lifetime have come out in the past year, but I was not prepared to make anything. I was just trying to survive and feel OK day by day,” says Dear. “I didn’t spend my time being productive every single day. I figured a lot of people feel guilt about what they did or didn’t do in the past year.”
