There is a national strategy to make sure that communities of color are under-counted.” — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan

Mayor Mike Duggan says that so far Detroit is seeing a poor response in the 2020 census count.

We are the third worst-performing city in America. The problem is far worse than in past years,” says Mayor Duggan.

The mayor says this is in part a result of the Trump administration’s policy changes around the census.

There is a national strategy to make sure that communities of color are under-counted,” says Duggan.

With little faith in the appeals process, Duggan says it’s imperative that Detroit residents get counted during the voluntary census period. He says that political representation in Lansing and funding for programs like school lunches and Medicaid depend on an accurate count.
