The State of Michigan is launching a COVID safety grant program for small businesses. About $8.5 million will be on offer in total.

Small businesses with up to 250 employees can apply for up to $10,000 in matching grant funds. The application period runs through August 7th.

As we are finding that the science is telling us that the aerosols may linger, we’re looking for ways to get that out of there.” — Sean Egan, State of Michigan

The money is earmarked for purchasing COVID safety items such as masks, thermometers and cleaning supplies.

These are not costs that you would budget for,” said Sean Egan, director of COVID workplace safety for the state. “These are things that they really need help to develop to make sure that our work places are truly safe.”

Businesses can also use the funds to improve their building’s air quality. Researchers are finding that COVID-19 may stay airborne for longer than originally believed.

As we are finding that the science is telling us that the aerosols may linger, we’re looking for ways to get that out of there,” Egan said.

He says options for updating its ventilation system range from upgrading air filters to installing ultraviolet lighting panels.
