Many businesses in Michigan are reopening this week for the first time in months.

We feel like these are safe steps to take, but it’s really important that we don’t let our guard down.” — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Economic re-engagement has felt like a long time coming for Michiganders, but officials warn the state is not out of the woods just yet.

Listen: Governor Gretchen Whitmer on re-engaging Michigan’s economy.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says that the decision to re-open the state was made with the counsel of public health experts.

We feel like these are safe steps to take, but it’s really important that we don’t let our guard down,” says Governor Whitmer.

Michigan’s public health capabilities have vastly improved over the last ten weeks, according to the Governor. She says that even with these improvements in public health preparedness, that it’s important to stay nimble and follow the science in the coming weeks and months. Adhering to safety measures, like wearing a mask in public and maintaining a healthy distance in enclosed spaces, will be key in the state’s mitigation of the virus.

This is a cultural change for us and it’s not always going to be easy,” says Whitmer on Michigan’s new normal.
