The Feeder Loft, Eastern Market Studio, Launches Record Label

Detroit musician Luis Resto has worked with musicians from Paul Simon to Eminem, and created The Feeder Loft in Eastern Market as a space for collaboration and live music.

A historic gathering place for musicians in Eastern Market is launching a record label.

“I wanted to provide a space to be able to nurture their ideas and to explore.” — Luis Resto, musician

Feeder Loft Records, the brain child of pianist Luis Resto and Salar Ansari, will take advantage of the space above DeVries cheese shop that has become a hub for local musicians and collaborations.

Listen: CultureShift’s Ann Delisi interviews founders Luis Resto and Salar Ansari about Feeder Loft Records.

Luis Resto has performed and recorded with everyone from Paul Simon to Patti Smith to Was (Not Was) to Eminem.

Nearly a decade ago, he moved his studio to Eastern Market, and the studio became a gathering place for musicians to collaborate, create and learn from one another.

“It began with me playing piano for the public and jam and it developed into an incubator,” Resto says. “I wanted to provide a space to be able to nurture their ideas and to explore.”

Luis’ work required him to travel and spend half of his time away from Detroit. In order for The Feeder Loft to continue it’s mission, he needed someone to be a constant presence in the space who had a unique skill set: understand music, know how to work with musicians, understand the intricacies of studio equipment and have the ability to record world-class musicians.

“I realized that I had a connection with the society here just through the music. I’d never experienced that.” — Salar Ansari, Feeder Lofts Records

Salar Ansari was the perfect person for the job. He was born in Tehran, but once he arrived in Detroit, the energy of the Motor City felt like the perfect place for him to be.

“I landed in New York City and six months later I found myself in Detroit,” Ansari says. “I realized that I had a connection with the society here just through the music. I’d never experienced that.”

With so much music recorded, it was time to share those creations with the world. So Feeder Loft Records was launched.

The first release “Feeder Loft Ambient Series, Vol. 1,” is comprised of recordings of Resto, Ansari and Rafael Statin and was recorded in a night-long session last November. Ansari says it’s the first multiple releases recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
