This Detroiter Ran 21 Miles to Send You A Heartfelt Message

Andrew Koper wanted to send a positive message during the COVID-19 crisis. The resulting effort turned into an epic adventure.

Andrew Koper is a Detroiter and avid runner who decided to show a little love during the COVID-19 pandemic in a unique way.

“The fact that it ended up being 21 [miles] just made it into an epic adventure, and a story I’ll tell my kids.”

What he didn’t expect is it would take him on a 21-mile journey through the city.

“With all this bad news, I thought, if I can run a route where my run tracking app could create a shape of a heart over the city, that would be a positive symbol,” Koper says.

His route took him through Detroit’s neighborhoods and Hamtramck — and even gave him a glimpse of the Faygo Beverages facility, a first for him.

“I knew I could do a big run,” Koper says. “So the fact that it ended up being 21 [miles] just made it into an epic adventure, and a story I’ll tell my kids.”
