Artist: Donny Hathaway
Song: Memory of Our Love
When the seasons change, so does my taste in music. The soundtrack to my summer in Detroit is much different than the soundtrack to my winter. It is the first snowy day here in the city, and while I’m not a huge Christmas music fan, I do love music that reminds me of this time of year. Music from Charles Schulz’s ‘Peanuts’ soundtrack is nostalgic for me, and so is the music of Donny Hathaway.
Obviously his song “This Christmas” is one of the best holiday songs ever written, but his song “Memory of Our Love” is a winter heater! It will definitely warm you up on these cold days.
Donny Hathaway’s career was going great up until his tragic passing in 1979. His best songs include “The Ghetto”, “Someday We’ll All Be Free”, “Little Ghetto Boy”, “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know”. His collaborations with Roberta Flack “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You” are some of the greatest soul duets ever recorded.
In 2013, Rhino records released a four-disc retrospective that combines the singer-songwriter’s essential studio and live tracks with 23 previously unreleased recordings. The Four-Disc Anthology features the soulful singer-songwriter’s essential solo tracks and duets with Roberta Flack along with two full discs of previously unreleased studio and live recordings.
The compilation includes the song “Memory of Our Love” and was recorded around 1973.
Sam’s Jams is the weekly song selection of WDET’s creative producer Sam Beaubien, a longtime Detroit musician who also helms the soul-funk band Will Sessions.
From 70 years ago to contemporary releases today, Sam’s Jams is the musical equivalent of digging for hours in dusty record store bins to find forgotten-but-should-be-remembered deep cuts pulled from the genres of funk, jazz and soul genres.
