David Bendeth is a record producer and musician born in London, England in 1954. In his twenties he was the guitar player in the house band at Speakeasy, a club that served as a late-night meting place for the music industry in the 1960’s and 70’s.

This week, Bendeth’s track “Feel the Real” from the album “Adrenalin” is our selection for Sam’s Jams, the weekly song selection of WDET’s creative producer Sam Beaubien, a longtime Detroit musician who also helms the soul-funk band Will Sessions.

In 1977, Bendeth formed the group The Bendeth Band that included legendary musicians like Lenny White, Marcus Miller, and Billy Cobham. The album was recorded as an instrumental project, but Bendeth decided to add vocals on the song “Feel The Real” and it ended up being the #1 Dance Single in the UK in 1979.

Bendeth went on to record and produce albums for The Police, Pointer Sisters, Joe Cocker, Elvis Presley, Bruce Hornsby, and many others. From 1987 to 1995 Bendeth was the Staff Producer and A&R for BMG Canada. During his time there, he signed the Cowboy Junkies, Crash Test Dummies, Big House, Charlie Major, and Prairie Oyster.

From 70 years ago to contemporary releases today, Sam’s Jams is the musical equivalent of digging for hours in dusty record store bins to find forgotten-but-should-be-remembered deep cuts pulled from the genres of funk, jazz and soul genres.
