Carlos Nielbock Came to Detroit Looking For His Father and Never Left

Carlos Nielbock is the son of an American father and German mother. Raised in Europe, he comes to Detroit looking for his father but ends up finding a home.

101.9 WDET presents Season 3 of the Twisted Storytellers Podcast. The podcast features a diverse cast of Detroit area storytellers who perform live to sold-out audiences. This season explores the real-life challenges faced by immigrants and reminds us all what it means to live in a modern day melting pot.

Carlos Nielbock’s father was an African-American U.S. soldier in World War II stationed in Germany after the war, where he met his mother, a white woman.

“They fell in love and out came me,” says Nielbock. “The army didn’t like that so much, so they sent him back. I stayed behind with my mother in Germany.”

Years later, Nielbock came to Detroit in search of his father, but ended up discovering a home.
