A new play filled with a dark sense of humor is now being staged at the Detroit Public Theatre.

It’s called The Beauty Queen of Leenane and it was written by Martin McDonagh — a Golden Globe-winning writer, director and playwright who recently wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated film Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.

CultureShift’s Ryan Patrick Hooper speaks with Andrew Borba, the show’s director, about what audience members can expect.

“[Beauty Queen] takes place in the ‘90s…though you would never know because it’s [set] on the very western part of Ireland. In a very tiny town,” Borba says.

For Sarah Clare Corporandy, the play’s lead actress, Beauty Queen has “a lot of wonderful humor. And then a lot of darkness. I personally think this is one of the great… plays of our time.”
