Does ‘Socialism’ Mean Anything Anymore in American Politics?

When you talk about ideas like Medicare for All or other broad-based safety net programs, the nearly immediate push-back is often to call those ideas “socialist.”

It’s used as a way to shut down any argument about liberal policy.

But how far are our characterizations of socialism from the actual meaning of the word? Has the word “socialism” essentially lost its meaning in modern American politics?

Alex Shephard is a staff writer at The New Republic. He recently wrote an article titled, “‘Socialism’ Has Lost All Meaning in American Politics.” He joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson.
