The Detroit Film Theatre is celebrating 45 years of screening films from around the world right here in Detroit.

Throughout the rest of February, they’re playing their most popular series of the year — the 2019 Oscar-nominated short films in animation, features and documentaries.

CultureShift’s Ryan Patrick Hooper speaks with DFT director Elliot Wilhelm about the shorts.

“We started showing the Oscar-nominated shorts probably about a decade ago,” recalls Wilhelm. “They were fairly popular from the beginning, but they didn’t achieve the kind of popularity that we have now. Part of the fun, of course, is that the show takes place after the nominations are announced…and generally wraps up…just before the academy awards are given out. People have a chance to see everything and decide for themselves.”
