Dangerous Deep Freeze Descends on Detroit

The polar vortex is freezing much of daily life in its tracks from the Dakotas to Michigan. Major universities are closed and the U.S. Postal Service is suspending deliveries because of the life-threatening cold.

Metro Detroit is plunging into dangerously-cold conditions.

Forecasters say a mass of arctic air – the infamous polar vortex – is hovering over the Midwest, producing wind chills of as much as 35 degrees below zero or more Fahrenheit throughout Michigan.

It’s even colder in the northern portions of the state.

National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Arnold tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter the frosty conditions could freeze exposed skin within minutes.
