Water Main Break Affects Downtown Detroit [MAP]

42-inch main burst Saturday. Affected residents should boil water.

Residents and business owners in downtown Detroit and the lower east side can should boil their water until further notice.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department says a 42-inch main broke Saturday night near McDougall and Larned, causing a loss of pressure and exposing the system to potential contamination. As a precaution, DWSD issued a boil water advisory for customers south of I-75 between the Lodge Freeway and Mt. Elliott (see map). Residents within the advisory area should boil their tap water for at least two minutes before drinking or cooking with it.

Pressure was restored Sunday morning, and the city says repairs should be complete Monday. Once the main is fixed, the Great Lakes Water Authority will conduct two water quality tests. If the results are acceptable, the city will lift the boil water advisory.
