The second annual Black Restaurant Week in Metro Detroit is underway.
The week-long event seeks to begin a tradition in and around the city of Detroit by celebrating the many establishments owned and operated by black restaurateurs.
Participating restaurants will feature specials and three course meals for both lunch and dinner, as well as other options that aren’t always available on the normal menu.
Kwaku Osei-Bonsu is the founder of BlackMetroEats.com. He tells Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson that the week of culinary delights fills a void.
“There is a need based on the city’s makeup to make sure that restaurants… across the board are receiving recognition,” says Osei-Bonsu. “When we talk about food we’re talking about it from a cultural standpoint, but also an equity standpoint.”
Osei-Bonsu says he thinks black business owners and leaders of organizations in the city are beginning to find success that’s been a long time coming.
“I think black entrepreneurs are finally seeing they have a piece of the pie.”
