Don Was, Ismael Ahmed, Ann Delisi Join Detroit Today As Concert of Colors Kicks Off
The five-day festival kicks off Wednesday and runs through Sunday.
It’s July, and that means it’s time for the annual Concert of Colors in Midtown Detroit.
What makes the festival special is its focus on diversity. The cultures, conversations, and people are as diverse as the music itself. Organizers say the goal of the 26-year-old festival is to unite the region’s diverse communities and ethnic groups “by presenting musical acts from around the world.” It also sticks out as one of the few music festivals in Metro Detroit that is free and open to the public.

Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson speaks with musician and record producer Don Was, Concert of Colors founder and WDET This Island Earth host Ismael Ahmed, and WDET Essential Music host Ann Delisi about this year’s festival.
Was will lead the 11th Don Was Detroit All Star Review as part of the festivities on Saturday, July 14th at Orchestra Hall. And he and Delisi will host an event Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the DIA taking a look back at past performances at the All Star Review.
“This year we’re going to be focusing on a very loose theme of Detroit Rock ‘n’ Roll,” says Was of this year’s All Star Review.
