New Bill Could Allow 30-Day Grace Period for License Plates

Michigan State Senators have unanimously approved a House bill that would allow a 30-day grace period for displaying a license plate.

The bill aims to make it easier to renew plates online…by giving drivers 30 days after registering a vehicle to display a valid license plate.

Representative Curt VanderWall is the sponsor of the bill. He says motorists renewing online will receive a printable receipt to show proof of registration.

Once you go online, you process it, it will give you a confirmation,” VanderWall says. “You’ll hit print, you can put that right in your vehicle. As soon as you do that it is entered into the system so the police department will actually have that in their system also.”

VanderWall says drivers will be required to carry a screenshot or copy of that receipt until the tags are delivered.

The bill now heads to the governor’s office.
