What Michiganders Should Watch for During Winter Olympics

John Niyo

The Winter Olympics are officially underway in PyeongChang, South Korea.

If you love bobsledding, skeleton, speed-skating, curling, or ice dancing, these are the international games for you.

Detroit News Sports Columnist John Niyo, who has covered six Olympics, joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to preview the winter games.

It’s a unique spectacle,” Niyo says of the games. “It will never stop being that.”

United States Olympic athletes come from across the country, but there are also a significant number from Michigan, especially in events such as ice skating and dancing.

Detroit’s always been a bit of a Mecca for skating in the U.S.,” says Niyo. “Ice dancing…for more than the last decade has…found a home (in Michigan) with two significant coaches and then several athletes.”

This year…all three teams for the U.S. in ice dancing will have a Michigan connection.”
