Volunteers plan to comb the streets of Detroit Wednesday night looking for homeless residents. It’s part of the annual Point in Time Count. The data collected includes numbers of both sheltered and unsheltered individuals. The count helps secure federal funding for local programs. Tasha Gray is Director of Homeless Action Network of Detroit or HAND. She says the data also help gauge the success of programs.
“There’s been some strategic efforts in the last year or so, really targeting people who have been experiencing chronic homelessness, meaning they’ve experienced repeated or long episodes of homelessness, and there’s been some progress made throughout the year, so we’re hoping that’s reflected on the night of January 31st. -Tasha Gray, HAND
Gray says a local outreach team has also helped identify people who are chronically homeless and unsheltered.
