The Best Food in Detroit in 2018

There’s no question the food scene has been changing over the past few years in Detroit and in surrounding communities.

A “foodie” scene has exploded, as it has in much of the country, bringing New American cuisine, fancy decor, and renewed emphasis on small family-owned eateries who have perfected their offerings over many years.

So where are we headed in the coming year? And what is Detroit and the metro region already doing perfectly?

Detroit Free Press restaurant critic Mark Kurlyandchik and WDET’s Candice Fortman join Detroit Today to talk about their dining experiences around town, especially their favorite spots for something simple like a burger or a slice of pizza.

California Burgerz is a halal burger joint modeled after In-N-Out (Burger), but it’s not a chain. It’s locally owned,” says Kurlyandchick of the new burger joint in Hamtramck. “I like to call it the slow version of fast food. You’ll go in and you’ll wait five-to-ten minutes, maybe, for a burger. But it’s worth it. It tastes really good. Taste buds don’t lie.”

Other favorite places around town mentioned during the conversation include Buddy’s Pizza, Side Track Bar and Grill in Ypsilanti, Miller’s Bar in Dearborn, and Oak City Grille in Royal Oak.
