Thanksgiving Special Programming Lineup

Thanksgiving Day

9 am - 10 am and 7 pm - 8 pm:  Backstory with The American History Guys— “Imagine Nations: Depictions of American Indians.”  In this hour long special, a look at how have native people have been represented — and misrepresented — in U.S. history. 

10 am - 11 am and 8 pm - 9 pm: Backstory with The American History Guys— “American As Pumpkin Pie.” What are the true historical roots of Thanksgiving?  On this holiday edition of BackStory, the History Guys search for the true roots of Thanksgiving. They discover that the holiday we celebrate today begins not with the Pilgrims, but with the Victorians, who in the midst of the Civil War sought a national holiday honoring home and family.

 

11 am -12 pm: Milk Street Radio’s Thanksgiving Special— “From Calcutta to Make-Ahead Mashed.”  America’s Test Kitchen Alum Christopher Kimball is in the kitchen again with Milk Street Radio and offers this special look at Thanksgiving foods. Reporter Sandip Roy desperately seeks turkey in Calcutta; tea-rubbed maple turkey; The Sporkful’s Dan Pashman on Thanksgiving anxiety; holiday call-ins with Sara Moulton; the myth of triptophan with Dr. Aaron Carroll; The New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik on his first Thanksgiving in 1980 in New York; J. Kenji Lopez-Alt on make-ahead mashed; and wine expert Stephen Meuse says Burgundy wines are best for the holiday table.

12 pm - 2 pm: WDET’s Thanksgiving Special: The WDET crew put their minds, their mics and their silly senses of humor together to create a Thanksgiving Special the whole family can enjoy!   

2 pm - 4 pm: The Third Coast Festival Best of the Best. In this two hour special, sit back and enjoy sounds from the winners of the 2017 audio documentary competition hosted by Gwen Macsai. 

4 pm - 7 pm: All Things Considered

 

FRIDAY,   NOVEMBER 24

9 am - 10 am and 7 pm - 8 pm: A Detroit Storycorps special. WDET’s Laura Herberg and Sasha Raiyn share some of the most compelling Detroit Stories recorded this past summer when the StoryCorps Mobile Unit came to the cultural district of Detroit and welcomed our community to tell their tales.

10 am - 12 pm: On Point with Tom Ashbrook
