We’re just a few weeks away from some big local elections in and around Detroit. But we’re also just now seeing the major statewide races in 2018 take shape.

On Tuesday, former Wayne State University Law School Dean Jocelyn Benson launched her campaign for Michigan Secretary of State as a Democrat.

This will be her second bid for that position in Michigan. She also ran in 2010, losing to Republican Ruth Johnson in a year that the GOP took control of all aspects of state government.

Right now, Benson is CEO and executive director of the Ross Initiative in Sports and Equality. She’s also the co-founder of Military Spouses of Michigan.

She joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about her candidacy.

“I’ve accomplished a great deal in the years since 2010,” says Benson. “But the passion I have for the issues of the Secretary of State’s Office and that the secretary of state is responsible for has only grown and not diminished.”

“I’ve always seen that office as one of the best ways that anyone can serve the people of Michigan and make our democracy one that’s a model for the rest of the country,” she says.
