Detroit is celebrating June as Pride Month with the raising of a rainbow flag in Hart Plaza

This is the first time the pride flag has been officially flown by the city for the month.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig helped raise the flag. He says it is a great symbol of the city’s growing support and trust between the LGBT community and the police force.

“You can’t have trust relationship in any community if you’re not working with that community,” Craig says. “You name a community, it doesn’t matter. And so trust is the glue, as I like to say, that holds the police and the community together.”

The flag raising ceremony comes days before the start of the Motor City Pride Festival on Saturday.
