Consumers Energy Investing $440M in Natural Gas Pipeline Improvements

The plan includes enhancing and replacing pipelines across Michigan.

Consumers Energy is investing $440 million to improve the safety and integrity of its natural gas system.

Company officials say $75 million will be used to help 40 infrastructure projects across Michigan.

Spokesperson Terry DeDoes says the projects include replacing 67 miles of pipe with plastic and steel.

“In this case, its yellow plastic services lines that are non-corrosive,” DeDoes says. “They are a lot lower maintenance and a lot better way of delivering natural gas safely and reliably to our customers. We’re also part of that program replacing the gas mains that are out in the streets as well.”

DeDoes says the projects will be implemented in areas including Royal Oak, Plymouth and Flint.

He also says the company is beginning the first phase of constructing the Saginaw Trail Pipeline that will serve Saginaw, Genesee and Oakland counties.
