Educators Look to Comedy to Explain Education in Michigan

A group of teachers walks into a comedy club…

Educators and comedians will join forces in Ferndale Tuesday night to tell real stories of education in Michigan.

The Michigan Network for Equity in Education and Go Comedy are working together to produce “Education Ventures and Vultures.”

Karen Twomey is the president of the education group. She says the show has three parts.

“So you’ll have a storyteller,” Twomey says. “Then the Go Comedy team will do improve off of that actual experience that someone has had. And an expert will follow that up with explanation on how we got there.”

The show is based on true stories about what the group is calling the “corporate education reform movement.”

Twomey says they have been looking for innovative ways to build awareness around issues in education.

“And what we know is that if you hold a forum at a library you don’t get a huge turn out,” she says. “So, what we’re trying to do is find ways to better connect with the public in order to build awareness on what the issues are.”

The show is based on real parent and teacher stories. The show starts at 7 p.m.
