Milwaukee Avenue in Detroit has been renamed Stevie Wonder Avenue in honor of the Motown legend.

Wonder also received the key to the City of Detroit during a street sign unveiling ceremony Wednesday.

Wonder has been a longtime advocate for equal rights through his music and philanthropy.

He says that every time a Detroiter walks down Stevie Wonder Avenue, he wants them to remember to rise above hatred and ignorance.

I want all of us to walk down this street that leads us to a place humanity, of equality. Of fairness and respect for each man, no matter whatever the religion or culture or color,” Wonder says.

Milwaukee Avenue was once home to Wonder as a child. The street is also a short distance from the Motown Museum.
