As many as 5,000 Detroit students will receive free eye exams and glasses through a partnership between the Detroit Health Department and national non-profit Vision to Learn. The program kicked off Tuesday at Samuel Gompers Elementary Middle School in the Brightmoor Area. Forty-five students received their first free pair of glasses at the event. Austin Beutner is the founder of “Vision to Learn.” He spoke with WDET’s Bre’Anna Tinsley about why it’s important for students to have access to free eye care.
