The U.S. Coast Guard has a public hearing scheduled Thursday on the Ambassador Bridge owners’ request for a permit to build a twin span. Two state agencies have urged the Coast Guard to deny the request. Last week, the Detroit Free Press reported that the departments of Environmental Quality and Transportation challenged the legality of a land swap between the bridge company and the city of Detroit. State Representative Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), whose district includes the bridge, says the owners don’t have permission to use the land it received from the city to build a second span. She also tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller she’s concerned about the environmental impact on people who live in southwest Detroit. The public hearing starts at 5 p.m. at Greater Apostolic Faith Temple, 4735 W. Fort Street, Detroit.
