Kresge Foundation Invests $20 Million in Early Education in Detroit

Kresge wants to make sure Detroit has more and better options for its youngest residents.

The Kresge Foundation has announced it will invest $20 million to improve early childhood education in Detroit. Foundation President and CEO Rip Rapson says the number of licensed child care centers in the city can serve less than half of the 46,000 children who need care. He says Kresge’s goal is to improve the availability and the quality of childcare in the city.

The Kresge Foundation plans to begin offering grants to existing childcare providers immediately. Other parts of its early childhood education program will be implemented over the next six months to a year.

Rapson spoke with WDET’s Sascha Raiyn.
