Church in Burton Using Flint Water Exposed to Lead

The City of Flint has reissued a list of Its water customers who live outside of city limits. More than 200 homes and businesses made the list and may have been affected by the lead-contamination crisis. Bethany Baptist Church in Burton is on that list. Flint Township Fireman Greg King is a member of the church and conducted lead tests on the building’s water.

He says the church began taking precautions last summer.

I drew a water sample and I took it to an independent lab. That result came back at .002. Just a few weeks back the city of Burton dropped off a notice for our pastor to pick up a test kit, which he did. I drew a test kit from the inlet. That result came back at .138 which is almost ten times higher than before,” King says.

Since then the church has installed filters at its water main for about thousand dollars out of the church’s general fund and lead levels have dropped back down to safer levels. WDET’s Bre’Anna Tinsley spoke with Bethany Baptist pastor Mark Lasley. He says the church will continue avoiding use of the water.
