Prof Who Discovered Lead in Flint Seeks Help to Pay for Research

Scientist Marc Edwards used own funds to find lead in Flint’s water, now has GoFundMe account to try and cover the cost.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has been analyzing select water samples from Flint since it was first revealed that children in the city had high levels of lead in their blood.

But a national expert says people in Flint should still avoid using city water until the federal government declares it safe.

Virginia Tech Professor Marc Edwards was among the first to detect lead contamination in Flint, through research he essentially paid for from his own pocket.

Edwards tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter he’s started a GoFundMe account for donations to help cover the cost of the research.

But Edwards says the work itself was well worth the cost.
