Providing Context for the Shooting Death by Police of an Unarmed Man in Dearborn

How is the police killing of an unarmed black man in Dearborn similar to deaths around the country?

Dearborn is the first city in southeast Michigan to make news for the shooting death of an unarmed man by police since the Black Lives Matter movement began. Kevin Matthews was a 35-year-old man shot multiple times two days before Christmas. He was running from the police, and had a history of mental illness and run-ins with law enforcement.

How is the situation in Dearborn different or the same as some of the shocking stories we’ve heard around the country over the past couple years of unarmed black men and boys killed by police officers? Is southeast Michigan primed for dramatic and tragic encounters between residents and police?
