Detroit’s Banglatown neighborhood is throwing a block party to showcase area homes and gardens this weekend. Arts non-profit Powerhouse Productions is organizing performances in buildings near Conant and East Davison that it has turned into communal spaces. Organization co-founder Gina Reichert says she’s been working on the so-called “project houses” for the past five years.

“Squash house has maybe, like, been going on the longest, and it’s squash–like the sport and the vegetable. So the front part of the house will be a squash court like the racquet sport, and the back is a greenhouse for growing all different varieties of squash, the vegetable.”

Reichert says there will also be a talent show, followed by food and dancing at a nearby sculpture park. She says the block party runs from 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
