Wayne County Port Authority Trying to Figure out Future of Detroit Terminal

Executives are looking to bring water taxis and a ferry to the Detroit River.

Wayne County Port Authority officials are trying to figure out the future of passenger transportation at the Detroit terminal. One cruise ship has docked at the Detroit terminal so far this year, and only because it needed an emergency landing. Authority Executive Director John Loftus says he’s working to bring alternative forms of passenger transit to the Detroit River.

“We’re working on the water taxi which is strictly running basically from Cobo Center down to Belle Isle. This might be one of the stops along the way. That’s a domestic-type operation. [We’re also working on] the cross-river ferry operation, see if we can encourage people moving back and forth between our two cities.”

Loftus says he’s open to many options for the terminal’s future, including selling the building. He says he expects to see water taxis on the Detroit River next year.
